Many of you already know that Kristin gave birth to our second child, Luke on the 1st of October. After a lengthy stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for low blood sugar, Luke finally came home with us about a week ago. I posted some pictures below since alot of people have been hounding me mercilessly for a picture of him!

As you can imagine, it's been quite hectic bringing him home, adjusting to a 2 child family and keeping up with Drew and his schedule. We're doing good, though and just enjoying the time at home with Luke and Drew together...

P.S. The shaved spot on the side of his head is from one of the IV's he had in his head...

Drew Can Ride His Bike!!!!!!

This isn't all that "new" but Drew learned to ride his bike this summer without training wheels. All summer long it seemed as though he wasn't really all that interested in learning to ride his bike. Most of the kids in the neighborhood just ride scooters around the houses and don't ride bikes that much.

Well, my sister was here visiting and we looked around the side of the house, and there he was, just cruising down the road like it was old hat for him! We love Drew's determination to do something he has set out to do! Great job Drew, we love you so much!

Wild West City

This summer we went to a cool place in NJ called Wild West City. It's basically a mock-up of an old western boomtown where they conduct themed skits and shows with live actors riding horses and cracking whips and all things western!

I'm sure that most of you out there reading this who have younger children have gone through the whole loose tooth experience rather recently. We experienced our own "first lost tooth" this past week...well we sort of experienced it. This is how it went...

Drew has been fiddling with a loose tooth for about the last 2 weeks on and off and really has not been all that concerned about it. Some of our friends who have had children with loose teeth have had a completely different experience. Everything from crying to fussing to laughing. Drew really didn't exhibit any of these "symptoms." His treatment of the loose tooth was more of something to fool around with when he was bored.

So on Friday we were sitting down to eat lunch and Drew was fiddling around with it a bit more than usual. I had been on TDY the whole previous week and was remarking how much looser the tooth was than when I left. So about halfway through lunch, Kristin stopped eating and asked Drew where his tooth was! So he sprung-up and went to the mirror and sure enough, this is what he looked like...

We can only surmise that it was lost in the piece of cantaloupe he was chowing-down on at the time I informed him he would be revisiting his tooth in a day or two to which he gave me a weird look and went about eating the rest of his lunch. So much for the Tooth Fairy...

Despite how bad the Tribe have been performing this year, we went to a Cleveland Indians game on Memorial Weekend with Grandma and Grandpa Spurlock. We had an absolute blast and this was the first time Drew had been to Jacobs Field (now technically called Progressive Field).

Typical of their season, the Tribe lost to the Rangers, but we had a great time just being at the ballpark and watching the players take batting practice...

Prepping for Luke part 1 "Pimping Drew's Room"

In an effort to post something different than just places we go and things we do, I'm starting a "Prepping for Luke" series to highlight some of things we are doing to prepare for the arrival of our second child. For those of you in the know, you already know we have named him Luke Michael Spurlock.

Part of the preparation process has been to close down "Hotel Spurlock" otherwise known as the spare bedroom and move the big bed from there into Drew's room. So, Drew's bedroom got pimped on Thursday...complete with queen bed, reorganized toy shelves and just a general polishing. He is very happy with it mainly because he get s to "snuggle" at night with both Mommy and Daddy for book reading time.

Part 2 of the Prepping for Luke series will be a before section of the spare room, soon to be Luke's room...in the meantime here are some photos of Drew's pimped room...

Space Farm Zoo

In early May as the school year was winding-down, Drew and his Kindergarten class went to a neat place in northern New Jersey called Space Farm Zoo. The zoo started out as a family farm that began as one of the family members bringing home strays and eventually it became a zoo and museum. The museum portion included old farm machinery, antique cars, toys and all sorts of interesting stuff.

The strays being brought home eventually added-up and the pictures below tell the story as to all the things that Drew saw and did there...

Hilton Head 2008

We took our family vacation this year as we did last year in the Spring to Hilton Head Island, SC. As we typically do in Hilton Head, we had a BLAST!

We stayed at the Marriott's Surfwatch Resort and loved the resort. I can't really remember all that we did that week since I was so lazy in posting anything since April...I just finished perusing our friends' blogs and felt really lousy. So I'll let the pictures tell the story for me...

This is the winning fish caught by Drew (well, as the war story is told by him). A nice size catfish caught in the lake at our resort. I think Drew was more afraid of the fish than excited that he caught it based off of the look on his face!

We traditionally go to a restaurant called Hudson's on the Calibogue Sound for dinner when we are at Hilton Head. It's on eof the best places for seafood on the island and has cool fishing boats to explore!

One of the days while we were there we took a morning kayak trip on Broad Creek which runs East/West. We didn't see any dolphins but saw plenty of other wildlife such as crabs, egrets and a giant sea ray!

We were in Philadelphia for a family members wedding this past weekend and were going to head back to Picatinny on Sunday morning after the wedding...that was until we saw the sign for the Star Wars exhibit at the Frankin Museum in downtown Phila!

City Trip

This past weekend as part of the ongoing Unexploded Ordnance Removal project here at Picatinny, we were forced out of our house all day on Saturday (and Sunday). On Saturday, we took a bus trip to New York and to the American Museum of Natural History.

What a cool museum! And what a cool location. This was Drew's first trip to the city and he had his face pressed up against the glass of the bus on the way through downtown trying to see the tops of the buildings.

Words can't really do the museum justice so I'll just attach pictures with explanations.

Big Big Big News!

Well, we and a select few relatives and friends have known for a couple weeks but we wanted to wait for the first ultrasound to tell "the world" that after alot of effort and time Kristin is pregnant with our second child!

I was actually in Yuma, AZ when we found out and I don't think Kristin could have waited so she called me out there. We are both very excited and so is Drew! He's been asking for a baby brother or sister for some time now and is very thrilled he will be a big brother. Kristin is not due until October, so many updates will follow, just wanted to let you all know it's official! God is so good!

New Car!!!

I know...some of you family members are thinking "they just bought a new car like 2 years ago!" You're right, we did...but it was a piece of @$%^! For those of you out there that are possibly considering buying a Chrysler Pacifica, continue reading...

We bought the Pacifica in 2006 just before we PCS'd from Fort Riley. Got a great deal on it b/c it was a 2005 that was still on the lot when the 2006's began arriving. We should have seen things to come when we had it for 1 day and the DVD/CD changer gobbled-up 3 of our DVD's and wouldn't spit them back out. This happened twice in the first month. We finally got the DVD system fixed and largely had success with the car until about a year later when Kristin noticed a small "ticking" sound coming from the front end. Up examination at the dealer, they said the entire All Wheel Drive system had to be replaced (basically the entire transmission). the mechanic at the dealer told me that it would have been a $10,000 job had it not been covered under the warranty. Fast forward to a couple months ago when we had to have the rear axle-seal replaced, brake drums replaced and the gas pedel started sticking all of which was not covered under the powertrain warranty. So, with only 39,000 miles on it I had had enough.

So I started research on the internet and the field quickly narrowed to either the Honda Accord, or Toyota Camry, both of which are great cars. We test-drove both and felt the Accord to be a better car. So yesterday, we brought our new Honda Accord home! This is my first Honda and I must say that I am very, very impressed! The engineering is superb, the interior is awesome, the power and engine are great...I could go on for quite a while. Plus, the CD player is still working so we are already ahead of where we were with the Pacifica at this point.

Karate!

I have been meaning to post for a while but it has bee a really busy month at work with travel...

A couple of weeks back Drew finally started Karate, which he has been really wanting to do for some time now. He is very excited each and every lesson we got to and his attention could not be diverted by anything short of a nuclear explosion. So we are happy he has found something he really enjoys...let's see how long it lasts!

An 11 year old neighbor kid had a similar note pinned to his bedroom door. Naturally Drew looks up to the big kids and wants to do whatever it is that they do. It's scary how much influence random people have on what Drew thinks a "big boy" should be like. On with the deciphering! The next one I'll do line by line...

This was Drew's list to Santa. Now that you know what the words are, you are still probably wondering what they mean. Some things just don't make sense, even after they are deciphered. Now we will go deeper into Drew's mind...

I bet you are wondering, "How many kids were asking for Goliath this year???? Was that the hot item?" Back in the fall, Brian bought Drew a David action figure. Well, to Drew, to have a David (complete with sling shot) would not be fun to play with without a Goliath to defeat. Drew has been asking for a Goliath since then! I went to get one at the Christian bookstore and believe it or not, they were all out!!!

Next on the list that might need some explanation is the two-wheeler skateboard. That really wasn't a fair one for you all since only Brian and I really knew what that was. He actually wanted a two-wheel scooter. He's been playing with a hand-me-down baby 3 wheeler and was ready for the upgrade.

Now the robot Dad and robot dog have been on the list the longest. Since last Christmas in fact. Drew and I visited our friends Karen and Chloe just after Christmas last year. Chloe had received a robot and a robot dog. What an impression those robots made on Drew because a year later they still make the list.

Can You Read Drewese?

As we were cleaning-up and taking-down Christmas decorations this afternoon, we came across these little "notes" that Drew wrote. I must say we have been very proud of Drew for his reading that he has been doing (he's on level 2 books now)! His writing, on the other hand, needs translation from him.

So, in the spirit of reading Drew's writing, we are holding the first annual "Decipher the Drewese" contest. This is an opportunity for all of you "lurkers" out there that visit our site but never leave comments-hence the term lurker-to comment on the site. If you can decipher, line by line what these two notes from Drew say, then you will receive a leftover Christmas gift from us.

Just to let you all know, we already know what the notes say as we had to have Drew decipher them for us:-)

Christmas Greeting

Merry Christmas to all of you who I hope found the web-page relatively effortlessly as a result of our Christmas card. We thought we would use this blog as our vehicle for updating everyone on what has been a very busy year for the Spurlock Crew. This was a PCS year for us and with that comes busyness in and of itself!

As you can see, Drew has really grown this year! He started off the year in his second semester at Hampton Roads Montessori School in Newport News, Virginia. Drew absolutely LOVED that school and was sad to have to leave in June when we PCS'd. Before leaving Virginia he played soccer at Fort Eustis and although no goals were scored, he had a blast playing. After moving to New Jersey, Drew started Kindergarden and has been learning so quickly. He really has become an avid reader and will read just about every road sign he sees while riding in the car! He continued his soccer this past fall and is ramping-up for karate which will begin soon.

Kristin has continued to enjoy being at home with Drew and discovered the runner inside her! While in Virginia she paired-up with a running buddy and began training for the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach. While training for the race, she raced in three 5K races and one 8-mile race (the Yorktown Victory Run)! Go Mommy!!! She hasn't run much in New Jersey since we moved, but lets just say the weather hasn't been as pleasant to run in here. She has also stayed busy in the wives group here at Picatinny and with her scrapbooking (the card you received was hand-made)!

As for me, I started the year still in graduate school and finished in August with a Master of Science in Program Management. Once I graduated we moved from Virginia to Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey for my new job as an Acquisition Corps Officer. After moving Kristin and Drew here to Picatinny I had to attend the Acquisition Basic Course and Intermediate Contracting Course in Huntsville, Alabama for 3 months! Needless to say after graduating the courses in Huntsville, I was pretty schooled-out! Since October I've been getting settled into my new job as an Assistant Product Manager in the Joint Lightweight 155mm Howitzer Office here at Picatinny. It's been such a great job change for me, I truly feel blessed working there and look forward to work everyday.

That about hits all the high points. Paging through this blog you fill-in some of the blanks of the stuff I left-out. Our hope for the holidays for all of you is that the Lord has blessed you in as many ways that He has us, and that you all have a happy and joyful Christmas and New Years!!

Sledding

After 5+ inches of snow in the last couple of days and a coating of freezing rain/sleet, I couldn't resist the temptation any longer...

Drew and I went out to WalMart this morning in search of a sled since we had none from our days in Virginia. We found a sled that was a little pricey, but was really slick on the bottom and looked really fast. So we took our sled down the street from our house to a modest-sized hill for starters this season. We'll move-up to the bigger hills at the ski resorts later in the winter. The three of us had an absolute BLAST! The freezing rain over top of the snow made the conditions really fast as you can see from the video below. The top of the snow was like an ice rink!

Season in Full Swing

Well, the season is indeed in full swing at our house. Complete with snow on the ground and road salt all over the cars! It took us a while but we finally got our decorations up over this past week. We decided to go out and cut-down our own tree this year! This is the first year we have gotten a real tree since we were engaged to be married like 10 years ago!

We went to tree farm in NW New Jersey...let me tell you for all of you out there who have this picture of New Jersey in your heads (I had it too) of smog and pollution and factories and city, there is an incredibly beautiful part of the state as well. The area we went tree hunting in is some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen! I know, some of you are looking above for pictures of this beautiful place. Well, I sorta forgot the camera at home. I do have pictures of the tree above...one of the best trees we have ever had! Perfect for our house.

Promotion

Today Brian is officially a Major in the U.S. Army. We had a ceremony yesterday with cake and parents and the whole shebang. He even got a free lunch! It was the nicest promotion ceremony he's had yet. It was special since he was the only one getting promoted (vs. getting promoted as a group) and because of the insisting by his bosses. They had never promoted anyone in their office before since they are all civilians. Despite their lack of experience they did a great job! It was really great that Brian's parents and my parents were able to come too.

What does Jersey snow taste like Drew?

We had a very exciting morning here today. Drew hasn't seen this kind of snow since we left Kansas. In fact, we didn't even buy any snow boots last year for lack of use! Drew wanted to have a snowball fight more than anything else. Of course, that was not on the top of Mommy's list of fun things to do. Especially when his aim is not very accurate. I can say, "not in the face" as much as I want but in the end, I get a mouth full. So we moved on to building a snow man and shoveling the walk. I love having afternoon Kindergarten on days like these. His bus doesn't come until 11:30 so we have all morning to enjoy the snow. Our school didn' t have any delays or cancellations but many schools in the area did. This snow was quite a welcome surprise!

Pele Returns!

Kristin is at Michaels buying a new scrapping lamp, so Drew and I thought we would post some soccer pics....

Soccer came to an end today...but not before Drew scored the first goals of his career last week! Not only did he score his first goal, he unleashed for a hat trick in the span of like 3 minutes! They couldn't get the ball put on the ground fast enough for his mad skills!!!

A lot has happened this month. We moved into our new house, Brian is now home for good and of course we had a very exciting Halloween. We are loving our home and neighborhood. It's so quiet! The house is coming along. All the boxes are unpacked but we are still putting up the final touches. It's all worth it since we'll be here for 4 years!

On Halloween a couple of our neighbors got together and threw a pre-trick-or-treat party complete with "bat wings", "spiders" and "bloody punch". All the kids of our little neighborhood got together and ate and played. We stayed on post for all the trick-or-treating. In fact, Drew hit almost every house!

Drew's costume is not just any knight but Sir Peter of Wolfsbane (from The Chronicles of Narnia). He was quite the handsome knight in shining armor:-) He also had the opportunity to wear his costume for his first school Halloween parade.

Brian has this week off before he begins his new job on Monday. I'll let him blog about that since I'm not entirely schooled on the new and exciting world of the Acquisition Corps. All I know is that his office is a mere two blocks from our house and we expect him to be traveling more. For all you Army types out there, his official title is the APM for the Joint Light Weight 155 Howitzer Program.

Apple Pickin'

OK, Brian has schooled me on this blog thing now so I can post to it as well. Yesterday we went to Princeton NJ to pick apples at a farm and orchard. It was a gorgeous day and we were happy to have the opportunity to spend some time together. We have waaaay more apples than our little family needs but it was a ton of fun picking them. Afterward we went to downtown area of Princeton (the Aggieville of the Ivy League) and had some lunch. We all felt a little smarter afterward:-)

We are moving into our new house on October 10th. I'm so excited to get our own things back! The trailers are perfect for a temporary situation but I am glad that we will not be living in it until next summer.

Drew loves Kindergarten! He's in the afternoon class which takes some getting used to. It's hard for him to wake up, get dressed and then wait another 3 hours before the bus comes. He's also doing a weekly story time group at the library and soccer as well.

We found a great church! It's a bit of a drive but it felt like a perfect fit from the first day. Drew and I go to a community bible study on Wednesday mornings at a different church that is a bit closer. The format and size of this group is very much like the PWOC group I went to at Fort Riley. There are several other Pickatinny ladies there and one other person from our church that I know.

I will be busy with getting the house set up but I also plan on being involved with the school PTA and with the wives groups on post. This year I'll be taking a break from holding any major positions though. It's been 4 years in a row on one or more big volunteer positions. Maybe next year when Drew is in school all day.

Drew had his first day of Kindergarten a couple weeks ago at Dennis B. O'Brien Elementary in Rockaway, NJ. All of the kids from Picatinny (like 4 in all) go to this school and he has already made friends in his class that live on post. Below are a few pics of his first day waiting for the bus...

Sorry it has been so long since we last posted...I have been in Huntsville, AL for a school I have to attend and Kristin and Drew have been getting settled-in to the trailer I spoke of in my last post.

We were finally offered housing at Picatinny (pictures below) and will be moving-in in a week or so. Kristin and Drew will be moving-in by themselves without me but with the help of relatives and friends it should go fine. Overall it's an old house, but has lots of character and room for us.

I'm still in Huntsville.....Still.Going.To.School:( It feels like I have been in school for an eternity with grad school and all. Oh well, only 4 weeks left.

After we get moved, emails with phone and address will follow. Hope everyone is having a good fall and getting ramped-up for Halloween...boo

Finally Moving!

Well, the hour has finally arrived...We will be headed out for our 7th move of my career. Yeah, it's alot but what are ya gonna do? We will be tearing-down the computer tomorrow and heading to points north (New Jersey, ref "Joizee" post)

Housing is a rather disheartening situation at Picatinny where I will be stationed. At least for the immediate future. They are in the process of building housing for field-grade officers right now, but as GMH is so good at doing, they have nothing to offer us other than this:

Yes yes, we will be living in a trailer for who knows how long. I've been told it may be until next May. But there are financial upsides to this sad tale so we'll make the best of it. Just makes for alot of togetherness.

I'm excited to be out of grad school and finally start my Acquisition career in what looks to be a great office and job.

Hilton Head 2007

As some of you may know, we purchased a timeshare in Hilton Head, South Carolina recently and have begun making the trip down there as our summer vacations. Last week we accompanied my parents to their timeshare and had a great week. This trip, my sister and her family came down as well and a great time was had by all.

This summer we stayed at Harbor Pointe inside the Shelter Cove Plantation if any of you are familiar with Hilton Head. Drew had a great time on the beach, in the pool, playing putt-putt, in the pool some more, on the beach some more and...in the pool some more! I think I am well on my way to a serious skin problem from all the sun.

My sister, her husband and their three kids were able to be there as well which made for a great pseudo-family reunion. See below for some of the activities we took part in.

Drew and a starfish he "found" on the beach. We think it was dead...if it were alive, he never would have gone near it. It's limbs were falling-off so I think that was a good sign of it's health!

Kristin and I at Hudson's On The Docks...one of the BEST seafood spots on the island. A must if you are ever on Hilton Head and are looking for some great seafood!

On Thursday morning we went on the Shannon Tanner Wild& Wacky Wizzle Cruise. This is Drew and Shannon...after a blue ring pop! Shannon has a nightly show for kids at Shelter Cover during the summer months and does a dolphin watch/majic/variety cruise on Thursday mornings. A great thing to do if you have little-ones and are looking for a fun, cheap activity to do.

5 Years Old!!!

Drew is 5 years old!! That just makes us feel older.

We had a great day at the Virginia Air and Space Center for Drew's birthday party this past weekend. His birthday was actually last Monday, but we had his party on Sunday so more people could come. The party was great and had a science "lesson" on electricity and everyone got to ride the "Magic Carpet" motion simulator as well as explore the Air and Space Museum.

Okay, so for the first real post I guess I'll talk about PCS time. Many of you who will read this are Army families or are members of our close family so I don't need to elaborate on the PCS thing. We'll be PCS'ing to New Jersey this summer to a little known place called Picatinny Arsenal. I didn't know where it was either until I got the map out prior to selecting it as one of my choices for a new duty station. Overall, it looks nice. Most people hear we are going to Jersey and say "eeew" or "why are you moving there" or when they here Picatinny they say " uhhh where?" So we'll be headed ther after I complete my Masters this summer for me to work on an Army new howitzer program.

Point of this being, if anyone knows anyone in northwest New Jersey, send them our way with information a plenty. We'll need it!
